The station at Sweet Adeline
Has only one platform
The other platform
Had been destroyed during the war
And never replaced
Although concrete minimalist
It is a comfortable station
With a waiting room
That leads to the street
Through a lazy barrier
Manned by Greek Boy Phil
A refugee who had never left
A glass awning
Slightly too large
For its purpose
Was important
Or so it thought it was
As it provided shelter
If the waiting room was full
At night a single coach
Rested next to the platform
It was part of the push and pull
That travelled to Hartley on the hour
Signalman Sam was always worried
About the coach
In case he forgot it was there
When the express sped by
Using the avoiding line
Bur nothing had happened in forty-five years
The line was always clear by six
And the express passed at nine
When the sun was high in the sky
And the migrating birds had begun to fly
