Grasshopper Drowning

One

I was watching a tiny creature drowning

Its strength was slowly fading

A life ebbing away in a puddle no bigger

Than a dinner plate

I rescued it within seconds

Which pleased me

As I am a decent person

Two

Yet this decent person was once a soldier

Fighting in a war that was slowly eating itself

I had killed a number of men

But one remains in my dreams

We had mined an important supply bridge

There were few survivors such was our precision

Three

I watched an injured soldier

Slowly drowning in front of me

I made no attempt to rescue him

Unlike the wretched creature

That I had just rescued

Such was my decaying lust
