The School Days of Icarus

Do not fly too low over the water

Or fly too close to the sun

Those were the instructions of Daedalus

It was only when the Spanish Boy

Left St Stephens that I took notice of this warning

Which was of course too late

As I had drowned in the bay

I was buried by Alison on the beach

With little known ceremony

And I remain there to this day

Not far from the dune paths

In the shadows of the Great Cliffs

My useless feathers still litter the gorse

Much hastened by the shallow winds

There is a weathered wooden sign that reads

When gorse is out of blossom

Kissing is out of fashion

Be Warned

Be Warned

Be Warned
