The phrase dates back to the 17th century

It was famously used by the French poet Jean de La Fontaine

In his 1678 fable Les Deux Chiens et l’Âne Mort

Drinking the entire ocean is an impossible colossal task

So saying something is the sea to drink originally meant an undertaking that was impossibly hard

Over time people began using it in the negative (ce n’est pas C mer à boire) to mean a job isn’t that crazy or overwhelming after all

Beach

I was sitting on a nudist beach with my cousin Julie

Let me sat that I am not a nudist

Although I do understand those who enjoy the recreation

Julie is a rather large girl

Who prefers to be naked

As she feels invisible

And does not feel judged

Because of her weight

Quite why we were discussing the origins

Of the phrase was lost

In the history of our afternoon

I should not have known the answer

But as I am something of a sponge

I am full of useless information


Swimming in the Sea

As the day was late of Afrika

We decided to swim together

The water was as warm as the day

Julie asked if she seemed smaller

When swimming underwater

I said there was a reduced illusion
