Innocence

I have always considered the seventies

As the innocent years

Everything was so laid back

In those days you could see your future

We had just come out of a huge war

Do not be such a silly cow Alison

The seventies were hard

We had been betrayed by the socialists

Who understood the Beano more than Marx

You were only a porter at the station Jimmy

It was an honest job never let less be said

Since the last war it has been all about betrayal

And nothing else

There are no longer great leaders

And how the world is suffering

I enjoyed that decade you know

You spent most of it on your back

Cruel but true

But what a trip

You did not complain

Jimmy and his dolly bird girlfriend

His bit of posh who even owned a horse

Although you liked your station colleagues

You held them in contempt

Not true Alison and you know it

That is why you showed me off

When Helena died they understood my grief

That was beyond you

It did not register on your surface

Not even a fucking ripple

It was all about anger and confrontation

Everybody was stupid apart from you

A humble porter with a pretty girlfriend

That is all you were so bitter and jealous

Of those who through their own hard work

Had made it to university

In an effort to better themselves

Silver Spoons Alison

It was all about silver spoons

I did not hear you complain

When Daddy nagged by me

Gave you the opportunity

To further your studies

He liked me

He liked you but also disliked you

You were a safe pair of hands

Who would protect his beloved daughter

I thought you said it was the innocent decade

It was as the only protection I required

Was from myself

I had been given too many sweets

That is the sole reason why he funded your education

Did I disappoint

No

I rest my case

But you took no prisoners

People were hurt including me

This said you were a man of great compassion

And I loved you so much for that

I still do even after all these years

When Graham the Cabin died

You ensured that Mary and the children

Wanted for nothing

He was there for me at the station

I was not treated as a child but a man

We had a shared love of the railways

He saw that in me and it made him happy

I was a clever one who given a clear signal

Could or would make something of himself

He was the first door I passed though

You were the grand door that led to my path

When he died I honoured him that is all

As I honour you now

You are so full of shit Jimmy

Maybe I am

But it is perfumed shit

Which is better than nothing
