Across The Atlantic

Tryphena Speer was the youngest daughter of the industrialist Sir Edward Speer

She was also the most tragic and is thought to haunt Sholden Hall

When she was seventeen Tryphena met Christopher Van Buran

When he and his father Thomas A Van Buran visited Manchester

The steel magnate was one of the richest men in New York

Within days Christopher and Tryphena fell deeply in love with each other

And began to make plans for their future in either England or America

Christopher as the eldest son was the heir to the vast Van Buran empire

He did not initially return with his father as he wanted to explore England

And also meet the various captains of industry keen to make his acquaintance

This was obviously untrue as the young couple just travelled together

They planned a wedding that Christopher knew might not take place

As his father aware of the deception had requested his immediate return

This shattered Tryphena and although they corresponded frequently

The once loving couple began to grow apart through no fault of their own

A year after his return the engagement of Christopher to Lucille Main Hertz

Was announced in newspapers on both sides of the Atlantic

It was then that Tryphena suffered a total breakdown and was hospitalised

When she was released her loving father sent her abroad with a companion

This improved her mental state but she never fully recovered

And turned down many offers of marriage from would be suitors

Tryphena died at the early age of forty-two after catching a chill whilst walking

She was buried in the small chapel near Sholden Hall next to her father

In later years her ghost was reported to have been seen at a window

Which was one of three that gave uninterrupted views of the sea
