I showered on the Saint Andre bus as always
And read a book of poetry that I had found in the road
I was due to start my new job in a month and a half
But the prospect of this new employment did not excite me
Near my home on the Kent coast a P&O Ferry
Was becalmed in the shallows of the lawn
Or so I thought as it was really waiting for its cargo
Without incurring exorbitant harbour fees
How beautiful she was in the evening light
I told the captain that life shrinks if you unwrap it
He smiled and told me that I would miss my plants
Which I had left in my house on La Reunion
