It was one of those hot clear days
That Folkestone sees so much of
With every colour incredibly bright
And every outline hard and defined
Jane and I were walking along The Leas
And admiring the spectacular views out to sea
The temperature was touching twenty eight degrees
It was so hot that the breeze had faded to almost nothing
We stopped for a while and shared a bitter iced coffee
It was then that Jane found a slip of paper hidden in a book
Whose description of Folkestone is this
It appears to have been written by HG Wells
Why would he have written this
Because he lived near Sandgate for a while
Is his house still standing
Yes
Then may we see it
It is a private residence now
Then we shall admire it from afar
William has just finished reading
The War of the Worlds
He knows that life is possible on Mars
Jane has yet to read her new book
The History of Mr Polly
But she has read the note enclosed
