Mary on the Green

Mary on the Green

Was a good idea on paper

But to place an unclothed statue

In a smart residential district

Well that is going too far

When a man is honoured

With a statue

He remains clothed

There are no naked statues

Of the good and great

So why is Mary naked

I am asked frequently

The statue is not of Mary

So do not get too excited

I reply in a rather tired voice

Much irritated by the stupidity of the questions

It is a statue of all women

Rising from the shackles of their sex

That is quite obvious to anybody that thinks clearly

If you are only going to ask stupid questions
Then keep your fucking mouths shut

I say to myself

But that is not polite

So I have altered

My reply about Mary on the Green

It now reads or should read

If you are only going to ask stupid questions
Then keep your mouths well down
As nobody wants to hear them
In this part of London Town

This is going to be my last poem on the subject as I am off to buy Mary a thick winters coat as it can get jolly cold on the green during these darker months
