Horizons

The main bedroom in our large house faces the sea

It is a large room which has a main double bed near the window

This is where I sleep with Octavia

There is another much smaller bed against a trapped cupboard door

This is occasionally used as a sick bed or when we are uncomfortable

Octavia sleeps nearest to the window as she likes the sea air

I often watch her rise to witness the spectacular sunrises

She never dresses and always sits in the window chair caring little for her modesty

Due to the position of Richards the sun seems to have a clear and uninterrupted path across the sky

But it is not so much the sun that interest me but the changing nature of the horizon

I frequently watch it rise and fall usually over Octavia’s naked shoulder

The tide levels especially in winter vary wildly here in East Kent

And the mathematics of these disturbances can be seen clearly on the pier supports

I sometimes see ships passing and wonder of their origins and about the crews

Can these tired sailors see our cream house against the beige house of our nearest neighbours

Or are they too busy working to really consider the low coastal horizons nearby

I am planning to turn the adjacent sea facing room into a study so that I might write facing the sea

But at present this is a pipe dream as we are busy decorating other parts of the house

Which although less interesting are much loved for their inland views of the church and the distant sheep fields
