The Dark Lady

I was raised in a small village that was surrounded by a thick forest

The woodmill helped the village to survive and even prosper

My father worked there and so did both of my brothers

But I became a teacher and taught at the only school

Yet I had higher ambitions and applied for other posts

It was after I was accepted at a school in Thistlebridge

That I met the women who would later become my wife

She had moved into our village as she had tired of the city

I thought that it might have been the result of a sad love affair

But she assured me that was not the case as she was much travelled

Moor was the most beautiful woman that I had ever seen

She had a mane of long black hair and gentle raven eyes

I was told that her father was a pirate on the high seas

Who had escaped the hangman’s noose on many occasions

Her mother had originated in Gozo lived there still

Teaching the piano to those who cared to hire her

Needless to say that I stayed in my home village

And now teach my own children and others throughout the year

Moor is now a sculptor who carves pagan figures from wood

This brings in a steady income that happily supplements my own
