The village railway station only escaped the axe
Because the then owner of Sommerseat
Was a friend of a friend of the chancellor
This was to my advantage as I owned
The rather lovely stationmaster’s cottage
Our station was reduced but not unkindly so
With both platforms remaining and an hourly service
I belonged to the friends of the station
Who essentially worked with the railway people
To ensure that the station was kept nice and tidy
This said and I was not the only witness
To something we that all considered rather odd
As an unnamed woman was often seen
Hanging around the station area
Especially on early summer evenings
She was polite and friendly when spoken to
But at the same time was rather remote
The strange thing was that some days later
A white silk scarf would be found in the waiting room
It seemed too ordered to be accidental
And this began to trouble those who cared
