I own a copy of The First Man by Albert Camus
There is a photograph of Camus on the cover of my paperback
With a number of unidentified players
From the Racing Universitaire d’ Alger football team
He played as a goalkeeper for the RUA and once famously said
“All that I know most surely about morality and obligations, I owe to football,”
Albert was forced to retire from the game at the age of seventeen because of tuberculosis
In the background there are a number of his teammates
Who like many lived their lives and faded into total obscurity
Camus however was much celebrated in his later years
And although tragic his life
Was so much more than the ordinary
