I used to travel between
Station A and Station D
A journey of about thirty minutes
I always sat in the same seat
And soon became aware
That the girl opposite me
Shared the same habit
We exchanged glances
The odd smile but little else
She knew that I liked football
As I always read the sports pages
I learnt very little about her
Apart from two facts
Her name was Melanie Smith
And that she had a friend named Cora
Our journeys together lasted
For just over a year
Until one day when she was no longer there
I actually missed her for a while
It was a quiet love I suppose
But I got on with my life
Until I changed my job
Which made my previous journey redundant
I travelled on a different train
Until I met April in the planning office
We hit it off straight away
And soon set up home together
I later found out that she knew
The mysterious Cora
Who had told her in passing
That my travelling companion
Had taken her own life
Some years previously
No reason was given
Or at least not shared
This shook me to the edge
It still saddens me to this day
