We probably looked like an odd couple

As Pasadena had very short hair

And my hair was thick and shoulder length

Which retained its rough bleached appearance

I liked this style as I could choose not to shave

Pasadena’s hair was brown almost black

Although she had deep doe green eyes

Neither of us worked and hung around the beach

Selling cheap souvenirs and surfing shirts

And occasionally manning Mike’s soda stall

In another life we both worked in the hills

Taking advantage of our considerable talents

The Institute of Seismology and Earthquake Engineering

Was situated high above the southern city freeway

This is where we met by chance about five years ago

And although well paid we had both grown disenchanted

Because of our lack of progression upwards

Which we considered was well deserved

Technically we did not leave the Institute

But were retained on a glorified sabbatical

Which apart from certain agreed conditions

Suited the lifestyle that we had chosen for ourselves
