The Mathematics of Coincidence

I suppose mathematically what feels like a rare occurrence

Is often the inevitable outcome of and basic probabilities

What the fuck does that mean Joe

Work it out for yourself sis

You are talking in riddles again

Today I purchased a book of Tagore’s poetry

It was a random find Josie

I had not planned to buy this book

Then why did you buy it Joe

Because Tagore interests me

And I admire his poetry

We were planning to meet Sephine

But she had been delayed

We agreed to split and you chose

To meet her in town and share a coffee

As I had been suffering from a cold

I chose to visit the beach

As the sea breezes were soothing

When I arrived I found a family from India

Flying their colourful kites

Without being trite I had not expected

To see a family from India

On this the most English of beaches

They were obviously visitors

And it was nice that they were here

Enjoying their games and recreations

Yet the coincidence screamed at me

Even though I had expected

My day to be linear

Things had happened

To damage the straight line

I had randomly decided to visit the beach

I had randomly purchased

A book of poetry by Tagore

The family who were flying their kites

Were from India

Tagore was from India

Our connection had not been planned

It was a pure coincidence

That we were sitting only yards apart

I was reading an Indian poet

And our visitors were from India

Have you been taking anything Joe

No what about you

Nothing apart from the usual shit

Why do you ask

Because you are talking bollocks

Possibly

Joe what happened to the kites

The wind as gusty

The strings snapped

And they fell into the sea

Why do you ask

No reason
