Leaf<\/b><\/p>\n
I saw a leaf die today<\/p>\n
It was run over by many cars<\/p>\n
As it dreamt of its peacock summer<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The Small Death of a Leaf (Already Dead)<\/b><\/p>\n
I watched my leaf hide amongst its fellow leaves<\/p>\n
As an ice wind chilled cut through them without mercy<\/p>\n
Winter had arrived in Santorini and the seas looked dull<\/p>\n
Under the thin grey skies<\/p>\n
It had begun to rain and this dampness tempered the movement of the leaves<\/p>\n
But they were not still<\/p>\n
Just sluggish in their behaviour<\/p>\n
I looked at Caldera and imagined its violence<\/p>\n
How benign it was as the light faded on the day<\/p>\n
Cooling the breeze which was no longer warm<\/p>\n
One by one the once crisp leaves were blown into the road<\/p>\n
Opposite the military barracks<\/p>\n
Where they were destroyed without cause<\/p>\n
Night fell without ceremony<\/p>\n
The blue black darkness inhibited me<\/p>\n
My breath was shorter and more relaxed<\/p>\n
I had been watching my leaf<\/p>\n
Which I had been tempted to pick up<\/p>\n
I retired to my rest and dreamt of ice storms<\/p>\n
In my home town of Devizes<\/p>\n
And place it flat between the pages of my book<\/p>\n
My indecision proved fatal for the leaf<\/p>\n
As a sudden wet gust of the ice wind<\/p>\n
Threw it into the road<\/p>\n
Where it was crushed without mercy by a passing vehicle<\/p>\n
But I took comfort in knowing that as it died<\/p>\n
That the brittle leaf was quietly dreaming<\/p>\n
Of our summer still days in Santorini<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Greek Islands<\/b><\/p>\n
Leaves often dream of Greek Islands<\/p>\n
I often dream of leaves<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I am not Greek<\/p>\n
Nor am I an island<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
These dreams commence during the fall<\/p>\n
When death is near<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I only dream of leaves<\/p>\n
