Garnier"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>Le perle<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Le rubis<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Millis was sitting in the corner of the room on a worn settee<\/p>\n<p>She was drunk and had been drinking heavily since she returned from her grandmother\u2019s funeral<\/p>\n<p><i>The chain which swept down over your once ivory throat <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Will never as it used to do adorn your breasts<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Your breasts will no longer smell of the cedars\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Nor will they be fragrant with the perfumes of Sheba<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Dottie sat on the arm of the settee and ran her fingers through Millis\u2019s raven hair<\/p>\n<p><i>The perfumes of Sheba<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Oui<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Les pafums de Sabee<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Would you speak English to me<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u00a0You know my French is poor<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Very well<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Make that your last drink<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>No I will have many more<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Then you will end up in hospital<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I never thought that I would lose her<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>All of us were shocked<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Oui<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>One day she was here and the next she was dead<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>If I could lay my hands on that driver<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>No do not think about him<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i> I am probably glad that she died in an accident<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Dottie stood up and glared at her friend<\/p>\n<p><i>That is a dreadful thing to say she was the kindest woman I have ever met<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>But she was decaying<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>She was getting old<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>She was decaying<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I was glad that she died suddenly and was not allowed to decay<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>It was a hit and run somebody hit your grandmother then he or she drove off with your grandmother dead in the road<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>They are my heroes<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u00a0I worship them<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>You are drunk Millis and are becoming offensive<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>She died a pure death and was not allowed to decay you must see that<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>She died in pain on a wet dark winter road<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>She died instantly<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>She experienced no pain<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>And you have just buried her<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I have no mother<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>My father is a bastard<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I am a solitary child<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I have no brothers or sisters<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>You have me<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>You are my sister and I love you<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>You know that well<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I can do two things-<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Et vos visages detteints<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>De leur naturel albatre<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>N\u2019auront souci que leurs teints<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Soient peintures de cinabre<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I can make a pot of coffee<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>You do not make pots of coffee<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Well I make pots of coffee<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Or I can put on my coat and leave you to drink yourself into a stupor<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Then fuck off Dottie if you do not love me<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Friends are meant to love each other<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I love you Millis but you are not giving me much of a chance<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>You should cry and let it all out<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Cowards cry<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Why should I cry when I am bathed in happiness?<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I am glad that my grandmother is dead I hated watching her decay<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I am going to make coffee<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>So you are going to make coffee<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>You are going to drink the coffee I make and I am going to empty the remainder of that bottle down the sink<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>There are many other bottles<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Unopened<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I can open bottles you know<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>They will remain unopened<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>You will drink the coffee and in about an hour you will vomit in the toilet<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>But I will be with you ensuring that your raven hair is not soiled<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>It will be better in the morning<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Millis leaned forward to pick up the half empty glass<\/p>\n<p><i>See the glass is half empty<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>No Millis if you drink from that glass I will leave you to gloat in your own rottenness<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Very well give me a coffee<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I will drink your fucking coffee<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>You are so straight so fucking boring<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Many good people lose people who are dear to them and they do not react the way you have<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>You are disgusting at times<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I tried to understand you and be with you as I felt you needed me<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>But you celebrate in your own squalor<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>You do not try<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u00a0My mother died she was all I had<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>My father had fucked off and I was on my own<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>A solitary child<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>But she was there<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>She was always there<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>And now she is dead killed by a complete stranger<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Sit next to me<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I feel so lonely<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I will not drink<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Stay with me<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>You are my only friend<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>You ask for nothing in return<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>You are so uncomplicated<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I am sorry if I made you cry<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I cannot cry<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I have never been able to cry<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I did not cry when my mother died<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Truthfully I was a little relived<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Her death was obscene<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>It destroyed my faith<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I cursed the Virgin<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>And I cannot cry now<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I would give anything to weep fully<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>But I cannot cry<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Please weep for me<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>When filled with anguish with all freedom torn from us with sobs and moaning we shall end our lives<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Are you making that up as you go along<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Making what up?<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>The lines of poetry you are quoting<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>No it is not mine<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>It is quite beautiful<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I know my grandmother taught me these lines and many others<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Was the poet famous<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Not as a poet but more as a dramatist he was only an occasional poet<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>What was his name<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Robert Garnier his name was Robert Garnier<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>He is well known in my country<\/i><\/p>\n<p>As she finished her sentence Millis lurched forward and vomited into the tiled fireplace<\/p>\n<p><i>Get it out I can clean it up later after I see to you<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Breathe slowly do not panic\u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Are you finished?<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Or is there any more to come up?<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Get rid of it Millis<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>There is no more<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Then I will take you to the bathroom and clean you up<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I will stay with you<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>You will not be left alone<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Look Dottie look at the fireplace it is covered in rubies and pearls<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>The jewels of my madness<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Le perle<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Le
