Town and other Poems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Catholic Town<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Its spire was never completed you know<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Neither was the central tower<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pretty was walking on the wide path that separated the wall of Pugin\u2019s garden and the west cliffs that fell deeply into the sea<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solange was a few steps behind her and was holding an umbrella tight against the fierce wind<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Give me a hand I want to look over the wall<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>You will fall and be blown over the cliff silly<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>No I will not<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>And what about my umbrella?<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Put it down<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>And get wet<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>We are wet already<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solange cupped her hand and let Pretty place her boot into the sling<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>No I think you are right let us look at the building from another vantage<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Do you know that the word cloister comes from the Latin?<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>No<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Yes it comes from the Latin<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Really and what is the Latin for rain?<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>It comes from the word Claustrum which means enclosed<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>You are a mine of information today Pretty<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pretty smiled and lightly touched her friends arm<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>It is not like Majorca is it?<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Not in the slightest<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>I do not know why I am wearing this coat as I am soaked to the skin<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Me too<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Let us walk towards the road to see if we can get a better view and then we can visit the church<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Cloisters often featured in monastic houses<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>You don\u2019t say<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>It was a place where the monks could work and pray<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>They were usually open on one side but here in Ramsgate the cloister was enclosed<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>And dry<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>And dry although I imagine it would not have been very warm<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Well if the church is open then we will find out<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solange looked at the deserted footpath which was almost flooding due to the ferocity of the rain and wind<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Just think we are standing here on a cold January day and there is nobody else around<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>There are few dog walkers and joggers<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>They are as mad as we are<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>And to think this used to be a place of hope and devotion<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>It still is<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Pugin\u2019s vision was that of a Catholic town here on the edge of town with an aspect to open fields<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>There are no open fields within view<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>I know they were being sold off even in Pugin\u2019s time<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>I can only see houses and even more houses and the grey grey sea<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>As I said it was once a place of hope<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>In 1856 Thomas Grant invited monks to make a foundation here in Ramsgate<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>An English monk called Wilfred Alock who had been in Italy was sent by the Subiaco Congregation to form a monastery here in Ramsgate<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>There were high hopes<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Where has it all gone?<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>This place is so godless now<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Holy Ramsgate<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Beloved Catholic Town<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>What a vision these people had<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Are there any monks left?<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Not to my knowledge<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>And what is Pugin\u2019s house used for now?<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Is it a hotel?<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Sort of it is owned by a trust that helped to save it from demolition and it does take visitors<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The girls reached the busy road which dissected the holy and secular buildings<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They found that both the house and church were closed to visitors<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suddenly a passing van splashed them as it ran through a puddle that had formed<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Uh what a liberty<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Typical one gets wet and wetter still<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They both looked towards the town<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Let us visit Julie Doo on the Plains of Waterloo<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><em>How Beautiful it is<br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About an hour after Pretty and Solange walked away<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To visit their dear friend in Waterloo<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A frail middle aged man walked into his church and remarked<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>How beautiful it is<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was his final visit to the church<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Ramsgate Margate Sister Towns<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Both Ramsgate and Margate are very similar<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>What do you mean?<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>They\u00a0 faded and became infested as the decay set in<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>And then they were rescued<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>I wished that was the case<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Explain<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Both towns are improving but there is a long way to go<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>As you have seen they are both sisters who are wearing pretty dresses but their knickers are soiled<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Hidden and unseen and that in my view spoils everything<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>They should be wearing dirty dresses and clean underwear you know<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Then nobody would visit them<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Clean dresses are a must even if their underwear smells<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Wine Cold Wine<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The acrid taste of the dying night fires<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hung rigidly and quietly in the fret frost air<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My town is sleeping<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The morning is frigid<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only the night owls are awake<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And they are busy watching the early creatures<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the dark lanes and hedgerows of the hour<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As I walk away from you a curiosity haunts me<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Are you still wearing my favourite shirt?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Wet Paint on a Blue Billboard<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The blue billboard was vacant apart from a message that had been daubed roughly in blue paint<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>WET PAINT<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The instruction was ignored by most people with the exception of Meret Oppenheim who had never visited the railway station where the billboard was situated<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Catholic Town Its spire was
