The Romans loved collecting stamps<\/p>\n
Evidence of this has been found<\/p>\n
In Eastern Kent since Victoria<\/p>\n
But I have little interest in this<\/p>\n
As I do not forgive the sea<\/p>\n
For all the lives it has taken<\/p>\n
Each lost had a brother sister<\/p>\n
A mother father or a wife<\/p>\n
This is why I will never forgive you<\/p>\n
Ships were lost on the sands<\/p>\n
In storms and in collisions<\/p>\n
With other ships not showing lights<\/p>\n
You might have forgiven this folly<\/p>\n
But you did not and this fuelled my hatred<\/p>\n
For these crimes I was condemned<\/p>\n
To a lonely lighthouse within sight of land<\/p>\n
Thirty-six years have passed since my arrival<\/p>\n
Yet I still see the Roman legions pass my extinguished light<\/p>\n
These brave men are doomed to die<\/p>\n
In the dry marshlands and irrigated deserts<\/p>\n
That are so cleverly hidden without thought<\/p>\n
By the white cliffs and frozen guano mounds<\/p>\n
If I was ever going to say a prayer<\/p>\n
I would salute these great collectors of lavender stamps<\/p>\n
