I came upon this abandoned card

In the shelter of a Kent station

It lay like a recluse in a neglected room

Out of curiosity I picked up the poppy card

It was from a teacher to a departing pupil

It read and I have changed the names to avoid distress

I hope your future adventures

Are filled with love success and happiness

In a way I was cross with the girl

As I did not think the loss was careless

It had been a wilful and deliberate act of defiance

I wonder if she will regret her past insolence

In her more mature years when she too is treated badly

By those who she tries to guide and mentor into womanhood
