I was waiting for a train at Hayes Railway Station in Kent<\/p>\n
Having just purchased a book of George Orwell’s poetry from the bookstall<\/p>\n
Up to then I did know that Orwell had written poetry<\/p>\n
My attention had been drawn to an incident in Hayes Middlesex<\/p>\n
When a flying bomb fell on a Gramophone Factory<\/p>\n
A great number of people died on that tragic July day<\/p>\n
And here I was in a town with an identical name<\/p>\n
There might have been other towns called Hayes<\/p>\n
But I was not aware of them and had never knowingly visited them<\/p>\n
But I knew Hayes from my younger years<\/p>\n
And had often passed the factory site when on a passing train<\/p>\n
Many of the buildings were still standing<\/p>\n
Some were derelict and some refurbished<\/p>\n
I have not visited Hayes for over thirty years<\/p>\n
It is now I am told multi cultural whatever that means<\/p>\n
Hayes is no longer English<\/p>\n
Although my memories are of it being English<\/p>\n
I am sure that if I revisited the town<\/p>\n
That I would feel uncomfortable and disappointed<\/p>\n
History teaches us that if you want to understand the future<\/p>\n
Then you must understand the past<\/p>\n
This does not appear to be happening at present<\/p>\n
Which in my view is rather sad<\/p>\n
