Index of a Few Words<\/b><\/p>\n
Nobody holidays in Margate anymore<\/p>\n
apart from lonely artists seeking the modern<\/p>\n
children no longer touch the clouds<\/p>\n
with their sandy spades<\/p>\n
and perch with amazing balance<\/p>\n
on the splendid steps<\/p>\n
near the Victorian clock<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
These steps are washed twice a day<\/p>\n
by the reluctant tides<\/p>\n
but are only peopled<\/p>\n
by faceless refugees<\/p>\n
escaping from other peoples wars<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
If it rains they stare at the sea<\/p>\n
from the once grand hotels<\/p>\n
where I might have stayed<\/p>\n
some seven decades ago<\/p>\n
but time limits memory<\/p>\n
and all doors now look the same<\/p>\n

in the main town there are many caf\u00e9\u2019s<\/p>\n
with green and blue chairs<\/p>\n
that match the sea<\/p>\n
on the few fine days<\/p>\n
that occur each summer<\/p>\n
the arty set tired of the galleries<\/p>\n
will retire to these tables<\/p>\n
and order coffees<\/p>\n
that will last an hour<\/p>\n

They will watch the green man<\/p>\n
at the pelican crossing<\/p>\n
and wait for the seaside clock<\/p>\n
to strike one<\/p>\n
but its melody<\/p>\n
as it is each day<\/p>\n
will be lost in the passing traffic<\/p>\n
fresh from Cliftonville equally faded<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n

Barefoot mothers in jeans<\/p>\n
rolled up to their knees<\/p>\n
will take their toddlers<\/p>\n
to the sad sea line<\/p>\n
and wash their hands<\/p>\n
of the conspicuous vetch<\/p>\n
which the children have touched<\/p>\n
on the journey down<\/p>\n
which is a mystery<\/p>\n
as it only exists<\/p>\n
in this grubby town<\/p>\n
