My late father owned a small garage<\/p>\n
Which had two gas pumps<\/p>\n
On its dusty forecourt<\/p>\n
One was green and red<\/p>\n
The other was red and green<\/p>\n
These pumps were in place<\/p>\n
From 1962 to 1975<\/p>\n
When they were removed<\/p>\n
During modernisation<\/p>\n
These redundant pumps<\/p>\n
Were then dumped into a cornfield<\/p>\n
Behind my fathers garage<\/p>\n
Where they rusted for many years<\/p>\n
When I was young I used to read<\/p>\n
All kinds of travel books<\/p>\n
Whilst sitting on these pumps<\/p>\n
I also read poetry from Ibiza<\/p>\n
And planned to visit the island<\/p>\n
Where I now live with Karin<\/p>\n
My German wife of ten years<\/p>\n
In 1998 the garage was swept away<\/p>\n
When the road that it served was widened<\/p>\n
The cornfield of my childhood dreams<\/p>\n
Is now covered by a fast food drive through<\/p>\n
I still think of it with Karin in my arms<\/p>\n
In the hour before we start our day<\/p>\n
And wonder what became of the gas pumps<\/p>\n
