{"id":11371,"date":"2022-07-24T10:52:38","date_gmt":"2022-07-24T09:52:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stuartpoetry.art\/?p=11371"},"modified":"2022-07-24T11:07:01","modified_gmt":"2022-07-24T10:07:01","slug":"indochine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stuartmillerosborne.com\/index.php\/2022\/07\/24\/indochine\/","title":{"rendered":"Indochine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>These were supposed to be countries of romance<\/p>\n<p>Of beauty of the richness of life<\/p>\n<p>But they descended into countries of sorrow and hate<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Why have you printed that on your canvas Maude<\/p>\n<p>It is for the summer exhibition Emily<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I rather like it<\/p>\n<p>You are very kind Julia<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Do you think it will be accepted<\/p>\n<p>I hope so as I do hate competition<\/p>\n<p>It is all rather vulgar<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Have you ever visited any of those countries Maude<\/p>\n<p>Yes many years ago to visit the grave of my grandmother<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I did not know that she was buried out there<\/p>\n<p>Yes she is buried in Cambodia<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She married a French chap and travelled there in 1931<\/p>\n<p>But their farm failed for various reasons and then Rene died<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But my grandmother stayed on with my mother and her brother<\/p>\n<p>They almost starved and sometimes killed wading birds for food<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Her son went almost native and vanished for long periods<\/p>\n<p>But my mother stayed at her side ignoring many offers of marriage<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sadly my grandmother slowly lost her mind and one day just faded away<\/p>\n<p>She was buried near the remains of her farm next to her husband<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My mother returned to England soon afterwards and married Daddy<\/p>\n<p>And when I was old enough she showed me her journal<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>These were supposed to be countries of romance<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Of beauty of the richness of life<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But they descended into countries of sorrow and hate<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These are not my words but my mothers words<\/p>\n<p>They are beautiful words which I cannot match<\/p>\n<p>However I am an artist and will share my mothers thoughts<\/p>\n<p>She is happy for me to do so as she was happy about my travelling<\/p>\n<p>Her journals have suddenly become illuminated she has told me this<\/p>\n<p>Amongst all the sad days there were many happy days<\/p>\n<p>In a way I am glad that she never witnessed the awful wars<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Will you return Maude<\/p>\n<p>I doubt it<\/p>\n<p>I have paid my respects to my grandparents<\/p>\n<p>I have shared my mothers early years<\/p>\n<p>I am an artist or at least I hope I am<\/p>\n<p>That I think is enough<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What are you going to call your work<\/p>\n<p>Indochine<\/p>\n<p>I have considered no other title<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>MFW<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>These were supposed to be countries of romance Of beauty of the richness of life But they descended into countries of sorrow and hate &nbsp;
