On the wall of my lounge<\/p>\n

I have a print of Picasso’s<\/p>\n

La Vie<\/em><\/p>\n

It was purchased in Paris<\/p>\n

Some years ago<\/p>\n

And has a tragic story<\/p>\n

Behind it<\/p>\n

Or so I am told<\/p>\n

As it portrays<\/p>\n

The doomed artist<\/p>\n

Carles Casagemas<\/p>\n

Who was a good friend<\/p>\n

Of Pablo Picasso<\/p>\n

It is a lonely work<\/p>\n

With Casagemas<\/p>\n

And Germaine<\/p>\n

Standing opposite<\/p>\n

A robed mother<\/p>\n

Both Casagemas<\/p>\n

And Germaine<\/p>\n

Seem happy<\/p>\n

He points<\/p>\n

Towards an infant<\/p>\n

As if to emphasise<\/p>\n

What might have been<\/p>\n

It is telling that<\/p>\n

Casagemas and Germaine<\/p>\n

Avoid eye contact<\/p>\n

With the robed woman<\/p>\n

As in real life<\/p>\n

Casagemas tried to kill<\/p>\n

Germaine<\/p>\n

Before shooting himself<\/p>\n

It is an intensely sad painting<\/p>\n

And even now after<\/p>\n

All these years<\/p>\n

I cannot study it for long<\/p>\n

Many of my friends<\/p>\n

Pass it without comment<\/p>\n

Some ask me and I share<\/p>\n

My scarce knowledge<\/p>\n

They enquire of Casagemas<\/p>\n

But never of Germaine<\/p>\n
