Peter Perfect was at a railway station in India <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was changing trains and had a long wait <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was a noisy chaotic station that was humming with people<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Every so often a colourful express train would on horn <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Scream through the station at speed without much attention paid<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Peter felt anonymous and invisible which comforted him <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because back in England he was a wanted man <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He had committed a murder or that was the story <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yet Peter knew the true facts as it had been a political argument <\/p>\n\n\n\n
That had become violent and he had not even been carrying the knife <\/p>\n\n\n\n
So he just vanished quietly into the obscurity of travel <\/p>\n\n\n\n
At first he thought that he would be arrested in days <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But days turned into weeks and weeks into months <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nearly a year had passed since the incident <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Peter had changed his appearance a little <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He had grown his hair and had a beard he was a drifter<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Just another invisible drifter <\/p>\n\n\n\n
There were many Europeans who had taken this route <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As he waited for his train Peter was reading <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Story of the Cadsbys by Rudyard Kipling <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This little softback was just over one hundred years old <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And had been printed for the Indian Railway Library <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Peter had considered that Empire had done a lot for India <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But it had been a curates’s egg <\/p>\n\n\n\n
His views would have seemed to be inflammatory to modern ears <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But he knew that he was a clear thinker not uninfluenced by others<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He knew this to a failing but also a strength<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His father had spent some time in India and taught him much <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some of which he put into practice if an advantage was required<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although he asked himself this question on a daily basis <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He did not really know what the future held <\/p>\n\n\n\n
India he might leave India tomorrow and travel elsewhere <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although this presented its own difficulties as he was in the country illegally <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Having helped a Danish couple crew their yacht <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He had a feeling that they had been involved in nefarious activities <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But they asked no questions so he did not probe further <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He wondered if this was freedom a true freedom or was it a prison cell <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Would it have been better taking his punishment <\/p>\n\n\n\n
There was no real answer to this question <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He hoped that his country would lose interest in him <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And that one day he might return as somebody else <\/p>\n\n\n\n
