Of all wars civil wars are the most ridiculous <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Brother against brother father against father <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I have fought in many of these wars <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some dating back to the sixteenth century <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I have been wounded killed or listed as missing<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During many of these insane conflicts <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But I have always written poetry <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The poetry of these civil wars <\/p>\n\n\n\n
At present I am in exile in the South Seas <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It sounds romantic and to some extent it is<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I have tried to paint or compose songs <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But I always return to my tired pen <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A friend has given me a book of poetry <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Poetry from the American Civil War <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I can recall many of these poems <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As I had the pleasure of meeting some of the poets<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Frequently I collaborated anonymously with them <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Like all wars this was a dirty filthy war <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And I can remember helping good ladies <\/p>\n\n\n\n
To bury both the Confederate and Union dead <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The slaughter instead of inspiring my poetry <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Silenced it for many years and it only reappeared <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In my final years in Spain as I lay in hospital <\/p>\n\n\n\n
After being executed for no real reason <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I vanished shortly after that and was soon forgotten <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Until I appeared here in the South Seas some years ago <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I found I had a history a wife and considerable property <\/p>\n\n\n\n
An angel told me that this was all mine <\/p>\n\n\n\n
If I committed to an eternal exile on this island <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And fought in no more wars<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Be they internal or external <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or just imagined in dreams <\/p>\n\n\n\n
God loved me I was sure of that <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But he was far from pleased with me <\/p>\n\n\n\n
