{"id":1311,"date":"2014-11-16T16:57:13","date_gmt":"2014-11-16T16:57:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stuartmillerosborne.co.uk\/?p=1311"},"modified":"2014-11-16T16:57:13","modified_gmt":"2014-11-16T16:57:13","slug":"the-dover-patrol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stuartmillerosborne.com\/index.php\/2014\/11\/16\/the-dover-patrol\/","title":{"rendered":"The Dover Patrol"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The minesweeper moved with difficulty through the churning black waters of the channel and was occasionally hit by rouge waves which caused the ship to shake violently<\/p>\n<p>Roberts looked landwards wishing that he was in a warm bed and counted the lights on the far off Kent coast<\/p>\n<p><i>Go, go south young man<br \/>\nAway from this miserable sea<br \/>\nLay your brushes on the canvas once more<br \/>\nAnd think of you and me <\/i><\/p>\n<p>A mermaid was swimming next to the ship seemingly untroubled by the heavy seas<\/p>\n<p><i>I will meet you on a soft pink beach<br \/>\nAnd our bodies will entwine<br \/>\nYou will kiss my breasts, you will kiss my tail<br \/>\nAnd in time you will be mine<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The minesweeper was suddenly hit by a freak wave and the young seaman fell heavily onto the deck of the ship<\/p>\n<p><i>Take him to the sick bay boys<br \/>\nAnd give him lots of rum<br \/>\nDo not waste a single drop<br \/>\nAnd for God\u2019s sake leave me some <\/i><\/p>\n<p>The First Mate left the cabin leaving Roberts in the care of the ship\u2019s doctor<\/p>\n<p><i>Take this drink it will make you think<br \/>\nOf places far from here<br \/>\nWhere mermaids sing and dolphins swim<br \/>\nAnd the sea is blue and clear <\/i><\/p>\n<p>In his pain and delirium the young seaman dreamt of the mermaid sitting with him in an open topped boat. They were singing sea shanty\u2019s together to the pleasure of the passing sea birds<\/p>\n<p><i>Dream with me, just dream with me<br \/>\nOf a world of peace and love<br \/>\nWhere mermaids and mere men will meet<br \/>\nIn the long lands of the dove <\/i><\/p>\n<p>JLW (1917)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This poem was written over ninety years ago and was discovered by the author on a visit to Dover.
