In November 1934 there were reports of strange lights<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the night sky high above the Norfolk Broads <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was reported in the Daily Mail but aroused little interest <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I was certainly not aware of it when I moved to Wroxham <\/p>\n\n\n\n
With my wife just over ten years ago<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jan having been an only child had inherited her fathers shop <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It had been trading poorly for a number of years <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And had actually been closed for six months before Tony died <\/p>\n\n\n\n
We had always wanted to get out of London <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As the price of properties were out of our reach <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was a golden opportunity to reinvent ourselves <\/p>\n\n\n\n
We decided to revive the shop and attempt <\/p>\n\n\n\n
To pick up the passing tourist trade in the summer <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ours was a jack of all trades shop selling all manner of things <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And to our great surprise the whole venture took off <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As within a couple of years we were part of the fabric of the area <\/p>\n\n\n\n
On of our customers was an odd fellow named Darius Stephens <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Who although rather abrupt was very knowledgeable <\/p>\n\n\n\n
About the history of the area around the Broads <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And it was Darius who gave me a church magazine <\/p>\n\n\n\n
That contained a short article about the strange lights <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It had been written in 1971 by a Carol Ennis-Jones<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And described how her mother when was just a child <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Was woken up night after night by what she described <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As hordes of screaming skulls flying past her bedroom window <\/p>\n\n\n\n
These skulls contained eyes and viper tongues and terrified the child <\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the time it was dismissed as hysteria and dismissed <\/p>\n\n\n\n
There were other reports locally but these differed from the child <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Being a progressive church magazine it questioned the sightings<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But obviously came down on the side of the Church <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Giving a message that there are things that God only understands <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was as I was looking at a grainy black and white photograph <\/p>\n\n\n\n
That I realised that the house where this had occurred was our shop <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Obviously there had been alterations and the lane to the airfield <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Was no longer there having been turned into a nature reserve<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The horse trough could be seen although it is now full of flowers <\/p>\n\n\n\n
There was still a sense of the flat lands of the area and the huge skies <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the following weeks I made light enquiries about Carol Ennis-Jones<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But drew a blank as neither Carol or her mother were well remembered <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Darius did mention however that the family moved from the area in 1990<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Without even a whisper which shocked the community and especially the church <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He did not have any information about her mother as no records existed <\/p>\n\n\n\n
