Today I am visiting your Chelsea House<\/p>\n
You have been commissioned to illustrate my most recent poems<\/p>\n
I do not think that poetry can be illustrated<\/p>\n
You agree but spend the next three hours illustrating my work<\/p>\n
I feel that my poems are too oblique<\/p>\n
We break for coffee and you invite me to join your swimming pool<\/p>\n
Which is in the basement<\/p>\n
I note that it is dry and full of furniture and avoids recreation<\/p>\n
You tell me that you use it every day<\/p>\n
Soon we are swimming amongst the Aaolto chairs and the fine pine tables and later we rest exhausted on your powder blue Chaise Longue<\/p>\n
In an hour we are working again<\/p>\n
You speak of your collection of paintings all works by the sisters of famous artists<\/p>\n
Blue on Blue<\/i><\/p>\n
The Stations of the Cross <\/i><\/p>\n
Christ in the Suburbs <\/i><\/p>\n
There are many adorning the plain walls of your modern house<\/p>\n
I touch these walls and feel the hum of the city<\/p>\n
My publisher visits the house<\/p>\n
He is keen to see your illustrations<\/p>\n
You present him with twenty-eight sheets of plain paper<\/p>\n
He protests<\/p>\n
You say that the soul and not the brush should illustrate poetry<\/p>\n
I think he understands your argument and leaves soon afterwards<\/p>\n
We talk and share yet another coffee and then I leave you alone once more in the Chelsea House <\/i><\/p>\n
