This poem is about your summer <\/p>\n\n\n\n

My summer <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are you reading<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Year of Magical Thinking <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is that the Joan Didion book <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look at the cover Joe <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do you see <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The authors name and the title of the book <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you see anything else <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not really <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look closely <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The colours of the individual letters vary <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Red blue and silver <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can you see two names <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joan <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And <\/p>\n\n\n\n

John <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why do you think that is <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well obviously Joan was the author <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But John who is John <\/p>\n\n\n\n

John Dunne was Joan’s husband <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In late 2003 he suffered a fatal coronary <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The book is about the loss of John <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the illness of Joan’s daughter Quintana Roo<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a very powerful book <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joan is one of my favourite writers <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have read many of her books <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why are reading it now <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because I am sad Joe <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why sad as the day is quite beautiful <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everything is drenched in colour <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everything is beautiful <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is why I am sad<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I know that this is so transient <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the blink of an eye it will be over<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like the poor boy who drowned in the bay last year <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a poet you must realise that <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I do and yes I feel a sadness that this might end<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But look at it this way <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are on a train journey <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a beautiful train journey <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can see nothing but beauty <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are enjoying this train journey <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then you arrive at your destination <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which is plain and without much beauty <\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of a sudden you feel sad <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bleak you feel dirty <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reality has overwhelmed you <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You sit in a coffee bar and close your eyes <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What thoughts pass through your mind <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The thoughts of the journey <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not always the destination <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the journey <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are on our journey at present <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We both know that the chill winds are not far away <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please read and finish Joan’s book <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But always keep a balance <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are not sad <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You just see things within a sharp white light as I do <\/p>\n\n\n\n
