I frequently travel through Ash <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Usually when returning from Canterbury <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is a large village typical of Kent <\/p>\n\n\n\n
With a history kind and sometimes unpleasant <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today the village seems to be at peace with its history <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But who am I to tell as I am a recent outsider <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I have seen many photographs from its recent past <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Henry Marsh and Punch with Susie May 1953<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Ash Football Eleven in White Post Meadow 1910<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hop-picking with convalescent soldiers helping out 1915<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Ash Ladies Hockey Club in 1935 <\/p>\n\n\n\n
All lanky girls one with owl glasses <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jolly Hockey Sticks spring to mind <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Home Guard advancing down a village street <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Somewhere in Southeast England disguised as Front Line Ash <\/p>\n\n\n\n
There are many other photographs too many to count <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Each records a small moment in history slowly fading <\/p>\n\n\n\n
On my numerous visits I find little has really changed<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mount Ephaim Mill was lost to a gale in 1955 <\/p>\n\n\n\n
After many honest years in its new home <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Colonel Stephen’s railway is also long gone <\/p>\n\n\n\n
No trains run to Ash today and they are softly missed <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Which cannot be said of the frequent cars and trucks <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Which make the village seem busier than it actually is <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The buses still run but they are becoming less frequent <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The village somewhat smarter is more ordered and bright <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But how many of the residents are Kent born <\/p>\n\n\n\n
How many families can count their village generations <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ash is by no means unique which is a little sad <\/p>\n\n\n\n
