Although Sandwich is world famous it is a peaceful place <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not much happens in Sandwich <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But that was not the case in April 1960 when a tragic killing occurred<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It involved a girl and two boys all aged eighteen <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ray Thomas had been going out with Jessie Sparks for over a year <\/p>\n\n\n\n
They were planning a future together but then it all changed <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As soon as Charles Clinton appeared on the scene <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jessie took a liking to him and cooled her romance with Ray <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This tore her former boyfriend apart and he decided to take action <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He stole his fathers service revolver and threatened Charles <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reports note that the older boy mocked Ray for weeping <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was shot four times and fell into the River Stour <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ray threw the revolver into the river and immediately surrendered <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sadly Charles died in hospital four days later from his wounds <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because of his age and the circumstances of his crime <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ray avoided the ultimate sanction <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But was sentenced to life imprisonment <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was released quietly in November 1968<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And was last seen in Mansfield just over a decade later <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jessie Sparks still lives in Sandwich but few people remember <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The awful outcome of later became known as the Sandwich Triangle
