<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>He was gun running to aid the Irish cause <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Was his yacht beautiful? <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Yes she was a twenty-eight ton yacht called the <\/i><em>Asgard <\/em><\/p>\n<p><i>What was the name of this brave man? <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Robert Erskine Childers <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>The writer?\u00a0 <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Yes<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>What happened to him? <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>He was caught and later executed <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Where does the bravery come into the equation Adam? <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>He was brave because he believed in something<\/i><\/p>\n<p><em>People are not as passonate these days<\/em><\/p>\n<p><i>What made you think of him? <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>The yacht to the left of the freighter over there <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>For some reason it reminded me of the Asgard <\/i><\/p>\n<p>An old man walked past the couple<\/p>\n<p><i>Please forgive my interruption but I heard your conversation about Robert Erskine Childers <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Yes the yacht out there brought him to mind <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Did you know him? <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Yes but I knew him at a very end of his life <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Please explain<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I was a member of the firing squad that executed him <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Really did you speak to him? <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>More than that the condemned man shook each of our hands before he was shot <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>He even joked <\/i><\/p>\n<p><em>Joked? <\/em><\/p>\n<p><i>Yes he instructed us to take a step forward so our aim would be easier<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>It must have been dreadful for you <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>It changed me a lot I had never been in favour of capital punishment and was ordered to join the firing party<\/i><\/p>\n<p><em>I could not disobey orders<\/em><\/p>\n<p><i>The poor man died whilst his appeal was being heard did you know that? <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>No <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I visit the St Margaret&#8217;s Bay quite often just to talk to people such as yourself and your good lady<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The old man touched his hat smiled and walked away in the direction of the caf\u00e9<\/p>\n<p>Adam put his arm around Flora Fairfax<\/p>\n<p><i>I knew he was a brave man but what a coincidence meeting somebody who had actually met him<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Adam are my eyes deceiving me or is that a revolver in the sand over there? <\/i><\/p>\n<p>Adam stood up and climbed down towards the beach<\/p>\n<p><i>Do be careful <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>It is a revolver I wonder how it got here <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Is it loaded? <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Every chamber <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Are you going to hand it in?<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Why should I it will most probably come in jolly useful <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>You are not going to shoot people are you? <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Only as a last resort <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Remember we a team and I have to protect you at all times <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I think the old man knew this and that is why he stopped <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Really <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>What is the year Flora?<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>2015 of course why do you ask? <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Do you know when Childers Died? <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>No but I would imagine it was a long time ago <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>1922 he was shot in 1922<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>This would have made the old man if he was actually telling the truth over one hundred years old <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Suddenly Flora felt a knife being pressed against her neck <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Adam! <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Do not move my dear otherwise I will cut your pretty throat <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Do you remember me Savage?<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Very well Van Hern <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>It looks like you are going to work on your own from now on <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>How did you get out?<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>A bribe here a bribe there <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Where are the diamonds you know they are mine? <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>In safe keeping <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>If you do not tell me where they are then I will cut your wife\u2019s pretty throat <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I have a revolver in my hand you know <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Yes I saw you pick it up <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>It has been buried in the sand for many years <\/i><\/p>\n<p>Adam pointed the revolver at Van Hern<\/p>\n<p><i>Let her go it is between you and me <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Please Adam please do as he asks <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Do not worry Flora the man is a coward<\/i><\/p>\n<p>A small trickle of blood began to run from Flora\u2019s neck staining her white blouse<\/p>\n<p><i>See Savage she is bleeding already it is only a flesh wound but I will be going deeper very very soon <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Please Adam <\/i><\/p>\n<p>A shot rang out and Van Hern\u2019s head lurched back and he fell dead onto the promenade<\/p>\n<p>Flora looked around and saw the old man holding a rifle<\/p>\n<p><i>These Mauser\u2019s are as old as I am but when called upon they do good service<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Tea for two sir and fresh scones <\/i><\/p>\n<p>Adam looked up from his book<\/p>\n<p><i>Yes thank you please put it there <\/i><\/p>\n<p>Flora took off her hat and smiled at Adam<\/p>\n<p><i>Really Adam you must try to pay attention we are supposed to be secret agents and all you do is read books <\/i><\/p>\n<p>Adam looked across the small caf\u00e9<\/p>\n<p>In the corner with a woman who appeared to be his mother was Dick Van Hern<\/p>\n<p>They were enjoying tea and scones<\/p>\n<p>He smiled<\/p>\n<p><i>Mr Savage we have some unfinished business I think <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Is that your mother Dick? <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Yes she was telling me of her meeting with Herr Hitler last month he sounds like a very interesting gentleman <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>He is a scoundrel Dick and the sooner we are rid of him the better <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Perhaps are you still on the trail of the missing diamonds with your lovely wife? <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Perhaps we are <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Then I wish you the very best of luck my friend <\/i><\/p>\n<p>Flora was standing on the cliffs that led directly to Dover<\/p>\n<p>She had left Adam in the caf\u00e9 as she knew that he would be fencing with his arch enemy and this normally went on for hours<\/p>\n<p>In the distance she saw the flashing green lights of her flying saucer as it flew low over the sea to avoid the coastal radar<\/p>\n<p>Soon it landed just in front of her and she climbed aboard<\/p>\n<p>The flying saucer then took off with the minimum of fuss and within four days Flora was back home on the planet Zero<\/p>\n<p>Adam was sitting on a wooden seat at St Margaret\u2019s Bay with his wife Flora Fairfax<\/p>\n<p>The day was warm but a brisk wind was whipping the sea up and the waves were pounding the beach as it they believed it was early autumn and not a summer&#8217;s day<\/p>\n<p>There were a number of small ships in the channel which were dwarfed by the large freighters and the cross-channel ferries leaving from Dover for France<\/p>\n<p>Adam expressed a wish to eat as he was hungry so Flora suggested that they go to the small caf\u00e9 she had noticed when they had parked their car<\/p>\n<p><i>Do you know where the diamonds are?
