Underneath Canterbury there is a subterranean railway station<\/p>\n
The station has three platforms<\/p>\n
Each at angles to the others<\/p>\n
The station was constructed over one hundred and fifty years ago<\/p>\n
And was designed to serve Maidstone and a few coastal towns<\/p>\n
The station has been threatened with closure on many occasions<\/p>\n
But has always been reprieved<\/p>\n
As the people of Canterbury love their subterranean station<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I am sitting with my beloved Caron<\/p>\n
Awaiting our train<\/p>\n
Which has been reported late<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
My wife is wearing a red coat and black jeans<\/p>\n
And unlike me is sitting on our old suitcase<\/p>\n
Which has travel labels from all over the world<\/p>\n
Attached to its grey fabric<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
About half an hour ago<\/p>\n
I purchased two badges from the station porter<\/p>\n
For forty pence each<\/p>\n
The badges are colourful representations<\/p>\n
Of the small steam locomotives<\/p>\n
That still serve this station<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
An announcement informs me<\/p>\n
That our train is due to arrive on platform six<\/p>\n
I peer into the dark tunnel towards Maidstone<\/p>\n
And note the distant lights of the train<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
My wife ignores my adventure<\/p>\n
And with an accompanying orchestra<\/p>\n
Sings sweetly about how plain the railway station seems<\/p>\n
Against the architectural splendours of the city<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
In the last carriage of the train<\/p>\n
I find the original plans of the station<\/p>\n
Hidden beneath my seat<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I hand them to the station porter<\/p>\n
Who expresses gratitude<\/p>\n
And notes that the plans often go missing<\/p>\n
But always return to their home station<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
