On my birthday you gave me a book<\/p>\n
A biography of a Yorkshire poet<\/p>\n
Who once visited the Ribblehead Viaduct<\/p>\n
I am standing in front of the massive structure<\/p>\n
Remembering those who died during its construction<\/p>\n
Some perished from disease and others were killed in industrial accidents<\/p>\n
A few just died from life\u2019s exhaustion<\/p>\n
Many are buried locally in windswept graveyards<\/p>\n
Only their ghosts remain<\/p>\n
Unseen but heard<\/p>\n
I would have liked to have seen a train cross the viaduct<\/p>\n
But none have passed<\/p>\n
Which is a pity<\/p>\n
As my time promised much<\/p>\n
It is nearly five and the autumn evening is now drawing in<\/p>\n
And as I wait for my small bus<\/p>\n
I am struck<\/p>\n
By the sheer blue ordinariness<\/p>\n
Of my unauthorised day<\/p>\n
