Yesterday I purchased a Victorian print <\/p>\n\n\n\n
From a traditional spring fayre in Rye<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The New College in Oxford <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I was told by the vendor <\/p>\n\n\n\n
That the print had originally belonged <\/p>\n\n\n\n
To his late stepmother<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Who when she was just a child<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Found herself on the final refugee ship<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bound for the safety of Felixstowe <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The framed print was one of her few possessions <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Along with books and treasured dolls <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In maturity she met a Cambridge man <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And lived happily in the city <\/p>\n\n\n\n
For a large number of years <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I was told that the print <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Had hung in their river house <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Until her passing late last year<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The reason for the sale <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Of the antiquated Oxford print <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Was that his ailing stepmother <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Had wanted its journey to continue<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So that others might benefit <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I was asked as a condition of sale <\/p>\n\n\n\n
That I look after the print and pass on her story <\/p>\n\n\n\n
So under a hot Rye sun on a worn cobbled street <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I gave my word and our journeys quietly merged
