In the summer of 1895 Emma Roberts received a copy of Matthew Arnold\u2019s Essays in Criticism <\/i>for her birthday<\/p>\n
She decorated her book by adding a Fleur-de-lis<\/i> as well as a number of illuminated characters<\/p>\n
Her brother helped her to construct two ribbon clasps<\/p>\n
In later life Emma and her brother Charles became missionaries and spent many years in China<\/p>\n
They both retired from view in the 1920s and were last recorded in Northern China in 1937<\/p>\n

On the day of the Super Moon<\/p>\n
I purchased Emma\u2019s book from small shop in Deal<\/p>\n
Its decorations had weathered well<\/p>\n
But its ribbon claps were gone leaving only shallow indentations<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I sat on Deal beach<\/p>\n
Night was falling<\/p>\n
In the channel the lights of far off ships flickered quietly<\/p>\n
I could also see huge fires burning<\/p>\n
France was celebrating again<\/p>\n
