My father often told me wartime stories<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some were about his own experiences<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But many of his stories were about his father <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Who like millions of others fought in the Great War<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My grandfather survived the war although twice wounded <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But he did not survive the guilt of returning home<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the Battle of the Somme<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was severely wounded by machine gunfire <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was not thought that he would live <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But against all odds he survived<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was later offered a job in the War Office <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Which he initially refused asking to be returned to France<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But then he changed his mind<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Without known explanation <\/p>\n\n\n\n
My grandfather never revealed <\/p>\n\n\n\n
What caused him to reconsider<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And did not welcome questions on the subject<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My father thinks my grandmother persuaded him <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Arguing that war had been futile for so long<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And that the country<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Would be a poorer place <\/p>\n\n\n\n
