He had never visited his homeland <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And lived with his mother in Leatherhead <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The town of his birth <\/p>\n\n\n\n
His father had been killed late in the war <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And his mother heavily pregnant with Stephen <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Was granted refugee status in England <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Stephen Smith was obviously his English name <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But he was never told his full Polish name <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He knew that he had been christened Zbigniew <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But was told to keep his English name <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As it would bring him many advantages <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Think like an Englishman act like an Englishman <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And above all be an Englishman that was all <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The war was over he was told <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Europe had been liberated <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But he saw things differently very differently <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And in 1970 visited Poland for the first time <\/p>\n\n\n\n
What he found appalled him and he decided <\/p>\n\n\n\n
To change the way things worked <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But he had not reckoned with Vera <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Who he passed in a street in Warszawa <\/p>\n\n\n\n
