I spent many of my childhood years in England <\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the time I was bored as my parents were traditional<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They drove a traditional car and wore traditional clothes <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Our holidays were so comfortably traditional <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Things never varied that much with only nips and tucks <\/p>\n\n\n\n
We stayed in traditional boarding houses <\/p>\n\n\n\n
With middle aged landladies late of the war <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The meals were always identical in time and low menu <\/p>\n\n\n\n
My parents never changed for the beach <\/p>\n\n\n\n
They just sat deeply in brightly coloured deckchairs <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And read the days newspapers <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before enjoying a hastily prepared lunch<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My sisters and I wore sensible swimming costumes<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We paddled and swam and sought memorable sea shells<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We were beyond sandcastles but not coloured beach balls<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We thought these honest years would never end in their repetition<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But these days did end when my parents moved to New Zealand <\/p>\n\n\n\n
For various reasons I have never returned to my England until now<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I must say that a great deal had changed and not much for the better<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And never has this been more evident than it is in our seaside towns <\/p>\n\n\n\n
