I purchased a nice house <\/p>\n
Halfway along Chesterfield Avenue <\/p>\n
My sister and I lived there <\/p>\n
For a number of years <\/p>\n
In total ignorance <\/p>\n
Of what happened in the park <\/p>\n
We frequently entertained friends<\/p>\n
Under the low leafy trees<\/p>\n
Or had picnics near the boating lake<\/p>\n
It was only after I met Valerie <\/p>\n
And had sold my beloved home<\/p>\n
That I learned a promising actress<\/p>\n
Who had appeared in a few wartime films <\/p>\n
Had been murdered only yards from my gate <\/p>\n
It was a particularly brutal murder <\/p>\n
Which has long slipped from memory<\/p>\n
As the killer was never caught <\/p>\n
Occasionally I still visit friends <\/p>\n
Who live in Chesterfield Avenue <\/p>\n
But the park that I once loved <\/p>\n
No longer feels the same <\/p>\n
If anything its corruption lingers <\/p>\n
And I feel uncomfortable <\/p>\n
