{"id":5995,"date":"2020-12-16T11:42:37","date_gmt":"2020-12-16T11:42:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stuartpoetry.art\/?p=5995"},"modified":"2020-12-16T11:42:37","modified_gmt":"2020-12-16T11:42:37","slug":"mr-mrs-gladstone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stuartmillerosborne.com\/index.php\/2020\/12\/16\/mr-mrs-gladstone\/","title":{"rendered":"Mr &#038; Mrs Gladstone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The likenesses of Mr &amp; Mrs Gladstone had hung on the wall of my grandfather\u2019s farm house for as long as I could remember<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They were actually plates with photographic images of the great man and his wife and dated from the late years of the nineteenth century<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although they had aged well there was a dark stain on William\u2019s plate which was supposed to have been the result of an incendiary bomb that set fire to some adjoining farm buildings in 1940 during a raid<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I never believed this tale and knew that the staining had been caused by the toxic smoke that came from my grandfather\u2019s pipe<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He often used to sit in his chair directly under the portrait of William smoking quite heavily<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cottage is now a restaurant and a sympathetic extension has been added to the building near where the stables used to stand<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the wall opposite the fireplace where the Welsh Dresser used to be is a solitary ribbon plate<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This shows the lovely Queen Alexandra in later life<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its pale blue ribbons have faded somewhat but the likeness of Edward\u2019s dear wife is still quite clear<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The likenesses of Mr &amp; Mrs Gladstone had hung on the wall of my grandfather\u2019s farm house for as long as I could remember They were actually plates with photographic images of the great man and his wife and dated from the late years of the nineteenth century Although they had aged well there was [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/stuartmillerosborne.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5995"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/stuartmillerosborne.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/stuartmillerosborne.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stuartmillerosborne.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stuartmillerosborne.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=5995"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/stuartmillerosborne.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5995\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/stuartmillerosborne.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=5995"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stuartmillerosborne.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=5995"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stuartmillerosborne.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=5995"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
