I have images of Frida all around my house<\/p>\n
She appears on my cushions and on my cups<\/p>\n
And is instantly recognisable<\/p>\n
Which is not a bad thing at all<\/p>\n
But in my bedroom I have a painting on the wall<\/p>\n
By Artemisia Gentileschi<\/p>\n
In which she portrays herself<\/p>\n
This work is totally ignored by my guests<\/p>\n
As are the self portraits by Sofonisba Anguissola<\/p>\n
That hang above my stairs<\/p>\n
I could go on as I have books about<\/p>\n
Elisabeth Vigee and Helene Scherfbeck on my shelves<\/p>\n
But I am the only one that reads them<\/p>\n
Which is rather sad as these women were incredibly talented<\/p>\n
I could go into town and shop for Frida merchandise<\/p>\n
But I would be wasting my time if I searched out<\/p>\n
Artemisia or Sofonisba Anguissola<\/p>\n
Are we overexposing Frida<\/p>\n
Does she deserve to be printed on cushion covers<\/p>\n
Should she dangle from overpriced keyrings<\/p>\n
Are we more in love with the image rather than the person<\/p>\n
I am guilty as the rest of us as I enjoy her dark eyes<\/p>\n
Following me around the room from the comfort of my plush settee<\/p>\n
There are answers but I am not going to supply one<\/p>\n
That is cheating as you need to come to your own conclusions and not share mine<\/p>\n
Whilst I have been writing this forgettable essay I have been watching<\/p>\n
My wife asleep on our bed under the mimosa window<\/p>\n
She is wearing a Frida tee shirt<\/p>\n
Which shows the artist with a small monkey<\/p>\n
It is the only garment she is wearing as the day is hot<\/p>\n
The tee shirt belongs to me which is of no matter<\/p>\n
As it suits my beautiful wife more than me<\/p>\n
