{"id":7841,"date":"2021-06-30T21:23:56","date_gmt":"2021-06-30T20:23:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stuartpoetry.art\/?p=7841"},"modified":"2021-06-30T21:50:02","modified_gmt":"2021-06-30T20:50:02","slug":"the-red-flag","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stuartmillerosborne.com\/index.php\/2021\/06\/30\/the-red-flag\/","title":{"rendered":"The Red Flag"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was waiting for a bus in front of a toy shop<\/p>\n<p>In the pouring rain<\/p>\n<p>The nearest window to me<\/p>\n<p>Was celebrating television for children<\/p>\n<p>In the Night Garden was prominent<\/p>\n<p>And models of the characters<\/p>\n<p>Were displayed in a colourful mock garden<\/p>\n<p>Most were deeply uninteresting<\/p>\n<p>But one appealed to me<\/p>\n<p>As it was holding a red flag<\/p>\n<p>A Communist perhaps<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe a Socialist in exile<\/p>\n<p>Its name was Iggle Piggle<\/p>\n<p>Or so I was told by a passing hood<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the creature through my wet glasses<\/p>\n<p>But could not determine its gender or species<\/p>\n<p>All I knew that during its life it had been terribly brave<\/p>\n<p>And had been forced to go into exile in the Night Garden<\/p>\n<p>My grandfather had fought in Spain<\/p>\n<p>And my father in the last war<\/p>\n<p>They were fighting the fascists<\/p>\n<p>Who were threatening to take over the free world<\/p>\n<p>I wondered if they had ever met Iggle Piggle<\/p>\n<p>Before he was hunted down and forced into exile<\/p>\n<p>It is said that the creature became disillusioned<\/p>\n<p>In later years when the truth about the Soviet Union<\/p>\n<p>Came to light and this was why he escaped from the Night Garden<\/p>\n<p>In a small boat with only a naked light for company<\/p>\n<p>He had been missing for many years but here he was<\/p>\n<p>In front of me with his Creole companion nearby<\/p>\n<p>I decided then to give Iggle Piggle a home<\/p>\n<p>This decision caused me to miss my bus so I walked far<\/p>\n<p>With the creature sleeping snugly in my winter coat pocket<\/p>\n<p>He now resides with other heroes from that civil war<\/p>\n<p>In a small cabinet that has commanding views<\/p>\n<p>Over the park and the city beyond<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was waiting for a bus in front of a toy shop In the pouring rain The nearest window to me Was celebrating television for children In the Night Garden was prominent And models of the characters Were displayed in a colourful mock garden Most were deeply uninteresting But one appealed to me As it [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/stuartmillerosborne.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7841"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/stuartmillerosborne.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/stuartmillerosborne.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stuartmillerosborne.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stuartmillerosborne.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=7841"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/stuartmillerosborne.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7841\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/stuartmillerosborne.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=7841"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stuartmillerosborne.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=7841"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stuartmillerosborne.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=7841"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
