I travelled to Paris with my family just after my tenth birthday<\/p>\n
This was the first time that I had travelled abroad<\/p>\n
The year was 1964<\/p>\n
I feel in love with Paris straight away<\/p>\n
Although I was warned by a man in a bar<\/p>\n
That she was a whore<\/p>\n
Who would spit you out<\/p>\n
When she had finished with you<\/p>\n
As I was unsure what a whore actually was<\/p>\n
I did not get the full meaning of what I was being told<\/p>\n
Two things happened to me whilst I was in Paris<\/p>\n
Which are easy to recall even after all these years<\/p>\n
The first happened outside of a bookshop<\/p>\n
When a woman who was born in 1891<\/p>\n
Spoke to me in broken English<\/p>\n
A language that she had partially learnt<\/p>\n
From the American soldiers<\/p>\n
After the liberation of the city<\/p>\n
She told me that I looked like a young Rimbaud<\/p>\n
I obviously was not aware of the boy poet<\/p>\n
But she showed me a faded photograph<\/p>\n
And I have to agree that there was more than a passing resemblance<\/p>\n
As I left the elderly woman gifted me a book of Rimbaud’s poems<\/p>\n
Which I still have and read occasionally when I am in France<\/p>\n
The second thing that happened to me occurred in Butte Chaumont<\/p>\n
When I discovered a small film unit shooting a movie<\/p>\n
They asked me if I would walk down a path<\/p>\n
As they filmed in the park and offered to pay me<\/p>\n
I agreed and was subsequently filmed and forgotten<\/p>\n
But I did meet the lead actress whose name was Nadja<\/p>\n
She was nice and told me the stream was man made<\/p>\n
And that the nearby rocks\u00a0were made of concrete<\/p>\n
I have visited Paris on many occasions since 1964<\/p>\n
But have never experienced the innocence of my first visit<\/p>\n
