High Street"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The street unlike others slopes violently down towards a peaceful river<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This peculiarity goes unnoticed by many<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children roll red marbles towards the far gutters and are cursed by passers by<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Tis a dangerous game you play young Harry<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>If a car does not end your life then you will scatter pedestrians with your silly game<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>I will call a policeman straight away<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>And as for you Julie Griggs a policeman\u2019s daughter just look at your dress<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mrs Morris who owns the dress shop near the church sits next to me<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We share tea and the occasional biscuit<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Our High Street is the widest in the country<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I do not answer as I know that Stockton-On-Tees has a wider street<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was built for the Bath trade<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coaches and horses by the dozen stopped in the town<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until the railways came and killed them off<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The town had two stations now both closed<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And Marlborough is once more stranded in its magical valley<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where children play marbles to the detriment of others<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And where young ladies late of the college smoke in alleys<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Away from their teachers and their mothers prim<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>It is the most dangerous of markets I believe<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>With careless traffic on both sides<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>I wonder why we are not killed on market days<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mr Pears the travelling florist is sitting at an adjacent table<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>I lost some roses to a careless bus<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u00a0And what about the July sponges spread all over the road<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Summer chaos such I have never seen<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>What a mess Mr Robert\u2019s sponges were reported as far away as Salisbury<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Murray the grocer said<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the left the caf\u00e9 full of dread<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I looked at the skies the rich vapour light was now receding with cause<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clouds were building from the west and would soon arrest the sun<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>I must be off now<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I said with a shallow bow<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>My wife has done her time<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>At the Gleaming Plough<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>What was her talk about today Mr Henderson?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Millie the waitress stood at my side<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shy within her question<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>She was giving a talk on the poems of a countryman<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>It had gathered much interest although the author was not Wiltshire born<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I raised my hand and then I was gone through the middle wooden door<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are no theatres in the town but I imagined one as I walked towards the common<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plays new and old would be performed and music would drift on the breeze<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Towards the royal hunting grounds where the ghosts of Kings would listen with interest<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>You are five minutes late<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>I was detained by my friends<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>In the Polar Caf\u00e9 I suppose<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>How was your talk?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Well received as they always are<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Let me take your bag for the hill is steep<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>When I was a child I rolled green marbles down this hill<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>You were a legend in this town Julie Griggs that is why I married you<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we neared the common mists were beginning to cover the town<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was not unusual and only the festive lights could be seen<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even our footsteps seemed muffled as we approached our home lane<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The town will be quiet tonight you know<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>I think not as it is New Year\u2019s Eve<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The town is always quiet when the mists arrive<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Its peculiar slope has been blamed<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>But I know that not to be true<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>It&#8217;s the fault of the river and the churches two<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>It&#8217;s the fault of the college and the velvet dew<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The street unlike others slopes
