Subject of my Dream"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As I walked along the beach I found a large marquee<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A barefoot woman of about forty years approached me<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Would you like an olive?<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>This island is famous for its olives<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The woman although having the complexion of an islander had the most vivid blue eyes<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Are you English?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>I cannot remember my nationality as I woke up on the beach a short while ago<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>From the way you are dressed I would think that you are sailor or a fisherman<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I looked at the many tables and the people who were gathering around them<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Is this a food festival?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Yes it is held once a year<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I looked at the woman\u2019s vivid blue eyes<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She looked down<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>You are admiring my eyes?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Are you an islander?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Yes<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>I am also the daughter of a German soldier<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Are you aware of the recent history of this island?<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>I know the history of the war but not of this island<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Does it have a name?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Yes<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u00a0But it no longer has a name<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Why?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Terrible things happened here during the war and when peace returned it was decided to erase the name of the island from the books<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Even on this very beach forty-five people were murdered<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>That is why this festival is held<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>To remember their souls<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>This is an island famous for its olives<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>If you look over there you can see my daughter<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A girl of about eighteen years smiled at her mother<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She had identical eyes<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blue<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vivid blue eyes<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Was you mother attacked by the German soldier?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>You mean was my mother raped by the German soldier<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>No<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>And he was not a small soldier<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>He was a commander and had been sent to this island after being injured early in the war<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The previous commander was recalled and died in action six months later<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>That caused sadness because he was a fair man<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Did the atrocities occur later in the war?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>In the second half of the war yes<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Before that although the island was occupied it was peaceful<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>When we were invaded the Germans found no resistance only women children and the elderly<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>All the fit men of the island were away fighting<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Things soon returned to normal and the elders on the island came to an unofficial agreement with the Germans as to what was acceptable and non-acceptable behaviour<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>We all thought we would see out the war in relative peace<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>That was until the partisans arrived in 1944<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>They attacked the German\u2019s and broke the peace<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Many German\u2019s died<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>My father knew that the island would be punished and it was not long before the hell soldiers arrived<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>They were brutes and operated a hot earth policy<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>A scorched earth policy<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Yes<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>A scorched earth policy<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The island was indeed burnt<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Many died horribly<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>How did you escape?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>My father was a good man<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>He warned the islanders of what was about to happen<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>But most took little notice<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>They wanted the island to be free<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The partial success of the partisans had inspired a false confidence<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>My father took us to the caves with a few loyal soldiers<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>He was a tired man who had seen enough of the war<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>He hid with us for a while and left us lightly armed<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>But we did not have to use the German guns<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>What happened to your father?<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>He lied<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>He returned to the town and was horrified at what he saw<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>But he kept his composure and lied to the hell soldiers<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>He told them that the south of the island had been cleared<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>And he was believed<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>They were stupid enough to believe his shallow lie<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>And then he vanished<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The brutes did not stay on the island for long<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Their blood lust was satisfied<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>And when it was safe to do so we came down from the caves and buried our dead<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Over one hundred and sixty people had been cruelly murdered<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Did you see your father again?<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Oh yes<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>For many years I thought he was dead but in 1960 my mother received a letter from Germany<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>My father was alive and still is<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>He had been arrested and was on his way back to Germany when the ship he was on was sunk by a torpedo<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Many were killed but he survived and reinvented himself after the war<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>But he always wanted to come back to the island but was not sure how he would be received<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>It took him fifteen years to write that letter<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>He and his wife visit the island quite often<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>When his health permits the journey<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>On the day he returned he was welcomed as the good commander<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Whose compassion and bravery saved us from being slaughtered<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>That is why I have blue eyes and my daughter has blue eyes<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>It is the heritage of my late mother\u2019s war<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was lying against a stone slab which had been crudely painted some years before<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was advertising Esso<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next to me were a man and a woman<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both were sunbathing<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I could see their valuables inside her string bag<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I knew that I should not be on the beach<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that this was just a dream<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A teenage boy came up to me<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He gave me a slice of melon<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>There has been a shark attack off of Ascension Island today<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>A British woman has been injured<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>I thought you would like to be made aware of this incident<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Thank you but I am not aware of my nationality<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Borders do not exist in dreams<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the day was becoming hot there were banks of mist over the distant sea<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ships were hidden although the sounds of their radio shows could be clearly heard<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Behind me there was a rough path which still showed the scars of the recent rain<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deep puddles were inhibiting the access of the people intending to visit the beach<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was walking along another path which was much smoother but still retained shallow puddles<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was not wearing shoes and the water was warm to the touch<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I closed my eyes in an attempt to end my dream<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the beach side shops the assistants wore no shoes<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indeed everybody was barefoot<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I asked a passing baker why nobody wore shoes in the island<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Once this was a noisy island full of celebration<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>But after the war nobody chose to wear shoes<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>And the island became silent<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even on the roughest ground shoes were not worn<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This did not damage the islander\u2019s feet<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only visitors suffered damage to their feet<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And this was rectified by prayer<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I returned to the crudely painted stone slab<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And stretched out on the fine sand<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I closed my eyes but did not dream<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was searching for my reality<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight:
