The strawberries in Kent are always ripe at this time of year
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

When we were younger we picked them for fun
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

It was a sort of working holiday
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

Were you paid?<\/em><\/p>\n

Yes but it was only enough to pay for the evening drinks at the pub and catch a film in Maidstone
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

What do you remember the most about your strawberry picking holiday Papa?
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

Well apart from the weather which was very hot<\/em><\/p>\n

I remember the lane that led to the ancient church
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

It was not much of a lane but it has remained in my memory ever since<\/em><\/p>\n

The church had been restored in 1875 having been there since the late eleventh century
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

I almost expected to meet the long forgotten craftsmen as Beatrice and I walked towards the church and the farm
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

You mentioned that there was a nearby cricket ground<\/em><\/p>\n

To our right there was a cricket ground
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

It was typically Kentish in appearance
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

But we never saw a match
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

Even though we were there for the two full weeks
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

Not one ball was bowled<\/em><\/p>\n

We spend many languid hours stretched out in front of the cricket pavilion
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

Or played impromptu games of cricket with the other strawberry pickers
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

Who were camping with us in a nearby field
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

Do you visit the area often?
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

Not as often as we would like
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

But it does not change
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

Small details may differ<\/em><\/p>\n

But overall it is the same
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

Kent is often called the Garden of England<\/em><\/p>\n

And once you visit its garden<\/em><\/p>\n

You never really leave
\n<\/em><\/p>\n
